Spring surf trips + a giveaway!

For what seems like eternity, our thermometer has been well below zero here in Vermont (-16ºF this morning). On the upside, the snow is glorious– the best it has been in years– but if I’m being honest, when the wind chill factor sends the temps down into the -20s and even -30s it’s hard for me to get excited about going skiing. What I CAN get excited about (as I sit in front of the fire) is planning a surf trip to warm, tropical waters.

In the last week, I’ve talked with three awesome women, none of whom know each other, but all of whom run surf retreats in glorious tropical locations around the globe. Now, I’m not always tuned into what the universe is trying to tell me, but these three conversations along with the fact that more than 300 people (thank you!) read my Top 10 Reasons Every Mom Should Learn to Surf post in just one day last week, kind of hit me over the head: I’m not the only one thinking of escaping winter in search of warm waves! So, in case you’re dreaming of tropical waters, here are three beautiful places to consider:

Family Surf Camp: Peaks n’ Swells, Costa Rica

My reigning favorite spot in the world, Peaks n’ Swells has the family camps dialed in. Incredible, top-notch instructors, 2:1 coach-to-kid ratio in the water, beachfront villa accommodations, monkeys, world-class breaks, bonfires on the beach, and family-style meals are among the many reasons we love it there. There are a few spots open in March and April and, p.s., both JetBlue and Southwest are starting new routes to Costa Rica from Boston this spring. Introductory fares anyone?

Women’s Surf & Yoga Retreat: Swell Women, Nicaragua

Through my work with Carve Designs, I connected with Lulu Agan, owner of Swell Women, who recently launched two week-long, women’s surf and yoga retreats in Nicaragua this April. Like me, Lulu learned to surf in her mid-30s and, like me, it changed her life. Her driving passion with her camps is to inspire– and be inspired by– other women. The all-inclusive surf & yoga retreats in Nicaragua and Maui are all about surfing, yoga, wellness, camaraderie, great food, and luxurious accommodations. Oh, and she’s offering a $500 discount on her April 18-25 Nicaragua trip to the first 4 people who book by March 6!

Paddle Surfing | SUP Trip: Rincon, Puerto Rico

I’m really excited to check out Rincon this spring. Everyone I know who has been there seems to absolutely love it, including Roxy Scully, owner of a little surf shop called WND & WVS in Burlington, Vt. I ran into Roxy, who had just returned from Rincon, last week and of course we had a lot to talk about– including her new SUP trips. Her model is a little different than the all-inclusives at Swell Women or Peaks n’ Swells. She found an amazing 5-bedroom house, stocked it with high-performance SUP boards, and hired a guide to help with arrangements, meet you at the airport, and stock your fridge with fresh pineapple and rum. She has two weeks open in April. If you book the week of April 18, let me know and maybe we’ll catch a wave together!

$200 Carve Designs Giveaway!

Speaking of the universe hitting you over the head, as I wrote this post, FedEx arrived with a delivery of bathing suits and summer dresses from my friends at Carve Designs. Clearly there is a huge disconnect between my shopping habits and my thermometer, but the box was like a little ray of springtime on a very cold day. There is no way in hell I’m putting on a bikini and taking a selfie (I’m 40 and my my skin hasn’t see the light of day since August so, you’re welcome), but trust me when I tell you that their spring line is the best yet. Be sure to check out the Oahu shorts (super comfy, great fit and colors). If you’re in the market for a new surf bikini, the Tamarindo and Catalina tops are my go-to favorites. I’m also just flat out in love with the Lagoon tunic.
